Full front page illustration: "Christmas Boxes in Camp--Christmas, 1861"

Shows Union soldiers enjoying presents they received in a large trunk. Done by Winslow Homer, one of America's favorite illustrators.

This issue also contains "Charles Dickens' New Christmas Stories - 1. Picking Up Evening Shadows, and 2. Picking Up A Pocket-Book", by Charles Dickens, taking nearly five pages of text.

Also a few civil war related prints. (see)

Being the first issue in the volume of 1862 this front page is typically browned, dirty, with edge wear & tears, or other disfigurements. This issue, however, is in good condition which is very uncommon.
