THE LONDON CHRONICLE, April 14, 1764
* The Sugar Act
* American revenue act
The photo shows the first part of an act recently passed by Parliament, reading in part: "...granting Certain Duties in the British Colonies and Plantations in America, and for improving and securing the Trade between the same and Great Britain."
Known as the Sugar Act, it actually placed a duty on a variety of goods. In Parliament it was called the American Revenue Act, and its primary function was to raise money to help alleviate the debt from the French and Indian War, as well as to defray the expense in managing colonial territories as stated in the first paragraph with: "...for defraying the expences of defending and protecting, and securing the same."
The entire text of this historic Act is printed here, beginning on a left hand page & ending on the facing page, so the issue could be opened & displayed showing the full text.
Complete in 8 pages, measures 8 1/2 by 11 in., very nice, clean condition.
A significant & historic report, and great to have in a London newspaper as this was the city where the Act was created. This is likely the very first newspaper appearance of the Sugar Act.
