WEEKLY UNION, Manchester, New Hampshire, March 11, 1862

* Battle of the first ironclads : Monitor versus the Merrimac

Page two has a column headed: "THE WAR!" "Startling News!" "Rebel Steamer Merrimac Out!" "Two Federal Frigates Destroyed!" with much reporting on the naval exploits in the Fortress Monroe vicinity.

Included is some nice reporting on the famous initial meeting between the new ironclads of both sides, portions including:

* ...a new actor appears upon the stage. The ironclad steamer 'Monitor', lately built at New York, arrived most opportunely & prepared to meet the Merrimac--a monster huge and ugly as herself...The two iron-clad vessels engaged each other at long & short range, with no perceptible effect upon either. They went alongside once or twice & seemed almost to run each other down but they soon reappeared. The Monitor, it is said, finally succeeded in forcing a large hole inthe port side of the Merrimac...The Monitor came fully up to expectations & proved herself impregnable to the heaviest shots at close quarters...

with more (see photos).

This issue has other reports on the Civil War as well, but they pale in comparison to the historic Monitor vs. Merrimac naval battle.

Complete in 4 pages, very nice condition.
