February 06, 1862

THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, February 6, 1862  Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
This is a very nice issue as the front page has over 1 1/2 columns taken up with a detailed report headed: "The Battle of Fishing Creek" "Full and Graphic Account Of It".
This is followed by another interesting item headed: "Arming The Negroes" which was taken from the New York Herald, and begins:
"After a great deal of thought, reading, reflection, meditation and prayer, we have determined to assist Massa Greeley in his pet scheme of arming the n****s..." with much more, full of the bigotry which was rampant at the time (photos below).
There are additional front page Civil War reports with heads; "From Lincolndom Via Richmond" "What the Morning Journals Say" and "Dying Confessions" amongst other smaller reports.
Much Civil War reporting continues to page 2 where are heads: "Resignation of Gen. Bonham" "Great Disaster to the Burnside Fleet" "Northern Intelligence" "Telegraphed To The Daily Delta" and a bit more.
Pages 3 & 4 are entirely taken up with advertisements, the latter including 19 illustrated steamboat ads, as well as an illustrated ad headed: "Ranaway--The slave woman Elizabeth..." with further particulars. There is also an illustrated "Negroes For Sale" ad on pg. 2.
Complete in 4 pgs. and in uncommonly nice, clean condition, just slightly irregular at the blank spine margin not affecting any type.
Rare & very desirable to find detailed Civil War battles in Confederate newspapers, offering a unique insight into the coverage which often differs from the more common northern reports.
