NEW YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, April 11, 1849.
* Terrific & early Gold Rush report
* Californbia Gold Rush
The top of the front page has one of the better reports we have seen on the extent of the richness of gold to be found in California, and of the actual beginning of the 1849 Gold Rush, with a nice introductory comment which includes:
* ...furnishes an additional confirmation of the reports heretofore received of the richness of the gold placers in California
The letter is datelined "Sutters, Upper California, Nov. 4, 1848" and some of the text includes:
...I am sitting in a tent writing you this epistle on the top of an old trunk...You have of course ere this heard of the extensive gold placers of California--a discovery which throws in the shade all the wonderful yards from Aladdin's Lamp...five months since two men employed in digging a mill race at the foot of the California mountains ...discovered some shining particles in the water, which upon examination proved to be pure gold. They dug farther and found more. The news spread & in two months 5000 persons were at work in the placer; whole towns were deserted & with good reason...here is found gold, which for ages, has been washing down from the mountains...
with more (see photos).
The front page has two other items headed: "Col. Webb's California Company" and "Mining In California". Other news of the day throughout. Complete in 4 pages, nice condition.
