PORTER'S SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, December 12, 1857.
* Baseball
* Chess
As noted in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage", this is a volume 1 issue of a very early sporting publication. Near the back of the issue is a report headed: "Base Ball". This is quite an early report for baseball, as any baseball reports before the Civil War are very uncommon. Additionally, the accompanying subheads read: "The Base-ball Controversy", "Oriental Base-ball Club", "Grounds", and much more.
Another article on page 231 entitled: "The Cricket Match" regards the events of a particular game which occurred in London.
This issue also has other sporting reports including boxing (Fistiana), Equestrianism, cricket, chess, & horseracing. Complete in 16 pages, an ornate sports-themed masthead can also be found on the front page. Although in relatively good condition, a tear on page 231 measuring about 3 inches can be found in addition to printing error on page 229.
