August 17, 1854
DESERET NEWS, Great Salt Lake City, U.T. (Utah Territory), Aug. 17, 1854  A very early issue of this newspaper, the first newspaper in Utah, which began in 1850. This issue is printed on "necessity paper", which is a bit heavier in stock than usual and has a grayish tone. Over half of the ftpg. is a portion of the continued: "History Of Joseph Smith". Also on the ftpg: "Discourse By President Heber C. Kimball, Tabernacle". Pgs. 2, 3 & 4 have varying reports & tidbits including items headed: "Extracts of a Letter from Elder S. W. Richards..." "Italian Mission" "A Prophecy Fulfilling Itself" "The Washington Monument" which tells of the ongoing construction & that it now stands at about 152 ft.; "Shocking Murder Supposed to have been done by Indians" & more. Much other news of the day with ads as well. Never bound nor trimmed, excellent condition save for foxing at a ftpg. fold, and some period inked edits to some text on the ftpg. (see), which does not cause loss of readability, 4 pgs.
