THE CHARTER OAK, Hartford, Connecticut, 1843 -1846  Quite an uncommon title; in fact, the first we have come across this title. This newspaper was published by William Burleigh, who In 1843 was invited to Hartford by the executive committee of the Connecticut anti-slavery society to take charge of its publication, the “Christian Freeman,” which soon became the “ Charter Oak,” a vigorously edited and brilliant defender of the anti-slavery and temperance reforms. Has some anti-slavery items, but also includes various news of the day, political reports, poetry, and many ads. Has a nice engraving of an oak tree in the masthead. Folio-size with 4 pgs., has minor margin wear but generally in very nice condition. A fine opportunity for a volume 1 issue of this uncommon anti-slavery title.
