July 07, 1876
DESERET EVENING NEWS, Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, July 7, 1876.

* Great General George Custer massacre newspaper
* Little Big Horn : Sitting Bull

This issue was published 20 years before statehood. The front page has a very short report headed: "Custer's Fight Confirmed" and reading: "The news, confirmatory of Custer's fight with the Indians on the Little Horn River, has been received at General Sheridan's headquarters."
This was a bit early for the Custer report, with further & much more detailed  information found on pg. 2, headed: "Still More of the Custer Massacre" which is prefaced with: "The Times's Bismarck special gives the following particulars of the Custer massacre:..." and what follows is over a full column of text reporting the details of the battle.

This is one of the better reports we have seen, portions including: "...Custer was among the last to fall, but when his cheering voice was no longer to be heard the Indians made easy work of the remainder. The bodies of all, save the Tribune correspondent, were stripped & most of them horribly mutilated. Custer's body was not mutilated; he was shot through the body & through the head..." with considerably more (see photos). Other news of the day & a wealth of ads.

Complete in 4 pgs., very nice, clean condition. A very early & detailed report, and great to have this significant event in a Western newspaper.
