This 16 page issue is missing one section measuring approximately 3.5 by 10.25 inches on page 591 which appears to have been cut out.  This issue contains illustrations, accompanied by text, of the latest inventions of the day including: "The World's Greatest Railway Terminal", "The Members of the Interstate Commerce Commission", "The main Lines of the Eleven Transcontinental Railroads of the United States', "The Growth of American Locomotives and Railroads", "Magnitude of Leading Railroad Lines of the World Represented by Size of Locomotives."

Historical Background: Scientific American is a popular science magazine, published (first weekly and later monthly) since August 28, 1845, making it the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States. It brings articles about new and innovative research to the amateur and lay audience.
