THE IMPARTIAL PROTESTANT MERCURY, London, Jan.
20, 1681-2 A rather rare title, the front page having
several reports from London including one that says: "Touching
the expected Ambassador from the King of Bantam, we are...told, That he
brings our King a great Present of Diamonds, and that his Errand is
reported to be, to desire of His Majesty the Freedom of sending some
Ships of his own into England for bringing the Product of his Country
tither..." The reverse of this singlesheet has an interesting ad for a book that reads: "That
very Useful Book, Entitled, THE PROTESTANT TUTOR, is now Re-printed,
instructing Children to Spelling, Reading English, and Grounding them
in the True Protestant Religion, and discovering the Errors, Deceits
and Cruelties of the Papists, Highly approved by all the Protestant
Nobility, Gentry, and Commonalty, and recommended to be used in all
Protestant SCHOOLS and Families, as an Antidote against POPERY....Sold
by Benjamin Harris, at his Shop at the Stationers Arms under the Piazza
of the Royal Exchange in Cornhil. Prince Bound Six-Pence." Issue
is double-dated because two calendars were in use at the time. Measures
11 1/4 by about 7 1/2, uneven at the left margin, very small hole in
the right margin, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition.
