Ceremonies of the Indians...

Item # 221084

May 1, 1779

THE LONDON MAGAZINE, England, May, 1779.

* North American Indians
* Uncommon title w/ nice masthead

Relatively few magazines published during the Revolutionary War, this title being one of them. This is a very handsome issue as the title/index page features a very intricately engraved and detailed view of the skyline of London, including the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral.

The contents within these 48 pages is rather wide-ranging with various political, literary, editorial, philosophical reports and other tidbits of the day.

There are some news reports near the back of the issue but I do not see any content concerning the Revolutionary War in America. This issue does include an article taking 1 1/2 pgs. headed: "Relation of the Mysterious Ceremonies used at the Introduction of an Indian into one of their Friendly Societies. From Carver's Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America." the photos below showing just portions.

There is also a nice fullpg. plate of the: "Great Bath of the Alhambra" in Granada, plus a related article: "Description of the Great Bath of the Alhambra" (see photos).

The issue measures about 5 by 8 1/4 inches and is in excellent condition. A nice example of a magazine giving evidence of what people in England were reading & talking about during the middle of the war with America.
