Babe Ruth is purchased by the Boston Red Sox...

Item # 220450

July 10, 1914

LEOMINSTER DAILY ENTERPRISE, Massachusetts, July 10, 1914  Page 3 of this issue has a relatively brief yet extremely significant item under the heading: "In The Field Of Sport" which reads: "President James J. Lannin of the Boston America league baseball team yesterday announced that he had bought pitchers Ruth and Shore from the Baltimore club of the International league. Catcher Egan was also included in the same deal. Mr. Lannin said that the three players represented an outlay of more than $25,000 by the Boston club."
This was at a time when Babe Ruth was a virtual unknown in the world of baseball, and is a report of him being purchased by the Boston Red Sox--in a Massachusetts newspaper. It is doubtful newspaper reports on Babe Ruth could be found from an earlier date.
This issue is complete in 8 pgs., has much chipping at the right margin which does cause some loss of text, but fortunately not even close to the Babe Ruth content. Even browning and loose at the spine. This issue is somewhat pulpish and must be handled with care.
