Holt Castle and the London Skyline...
Item # 217171 THE LONDON MAGAZINE, England, January, 1779
* Engraving of Holt Castle, Wales
Relatively few magazines published during the Revolutionary War, this title being one of them. This is a very handsome issue as the title/index page features a very intricately engraved and detailed view of the skyline of London, including the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral.
The contents within these 48 pages is rather wide-ranging with various political, literary, editorial, philosophical reports and other tidbits of the day. There are some news reports near the back of the issue but I do not see any content concerning the Revolutionary War in America.
This issue does feature a very nice engraving of "Holt Castle" and the facing page includes a nice article titled: "Description and History of Holt Castle" which is in Wales (see photos).
The issue measures about 5 by 8 1/4 inches and is in excellent condition. A nice display issue with the title/index page engraving, as well as the castle engraving which could be removed for individual display as it is dated in the upper right corner.
A nice example of a magazine giving evidence of what people in England were reading & talking about during the middle of the war with America.
