December 05, 1818

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Dec. 5, 1818  Inside has nearly two pages concerning the Indian troubles in Georgia and the thoughts of Andrew Jackson on the situation. See the hyperlink for further details of the controversy, which includes text taken from one of Jackson's letters printed in this newspaper.
In the second of two "Supplement" issues is a report with a small head: "Negroes Imported" concerning slaves in New Orleans (see).
On the front page of this 2nd Supplement is an historic report on Illinois joining the Union, reading: "Illinois--The president of the United States having signed the act for the admission of the state of Illinois into union, she may now be counted the twenty-first state in the confederacy. Her senators and representatives have taken their seats in congress." (see)
Complete in 32 pages with the 2 supplements, 6 by 9 1/2 inches, very nice condition.

This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
