July 23, 1831

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, July 23, 1831  An inside pg. has: "Death Of James Monroe--Fifth President of the United States" and still in the heading is printed: "At the house of his son-in law, Samuel L. Gouverneur, esq. New York at half past 3 o'clock P.M. July 4, 1831." What follows is a lengthy "Bibliographical Sketch" of him, which is then followed by 3 announcements of his death, one from the New York Society of the Cincinnati beginning: "The president with deep & sincere regret announces to the members of the society that the venerable  James Monroe, late president of the United States...died at his residence in this city..." with more (see). There are two two other reports as well as details of the funeral procession (see for portions). The entire text takes over 3 pages.
James Monroe was the third President to die on the 4th of July, the two preceding him being John Adams & Thomas Jefferson.
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, very nice condition.

This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
