August 21, 1839

AMERICAN BEACON, AND NORFOLK AND PORTSMOUTH DAILY ADVERTISER, Norfolk, Va., August 21, 1839 From Virginia before the Civil War, the front and back pages contain a variety of ads, has news on pg. 2, and more ads on pg. 3. Ftpg. ad for the Portsmouth & Roanoke Railroad Company includes a small woodcut of an early locomotive, baggage car and two passenger cars. Page 3 has a runaway ad offering a "$25 Reward" for the return of a "negro man named Robert Butt", with details. A nice opportunity for a pre-Civil War issue from the South which are becoming more and more scarce. Not very often that we can offer a title from Norfolk! Occasional foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Note: date will be different than the one shown in the photo.
