NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, November 4, 1826 One of the reports within has a small head: "Texas" with a portion of the text noting: "...the states of Cohuahuilla and Texas had nearly completed their constitutions and that they have determined to abolish slavery in toto; and that all slaves in the province at the promulgation of the decree should be free..." with more (see photos). This was when Texas was part of Mexico.
This issue also has 3 letters from George Washington concerning canals, all dated 1784, one signed: G. Washington and Horatio Gates, and another signed: G. Washington.
Among the other reports in this issue are: "Extracts from Mr. Jefferson's message of Nov. 8, 1808" "Extracts from Mr. Madison's message of Feb. 18, 1815" "Extract from Mr. Monroe's inaugural message of 4th March, 1817" "Champlain Canal" "Removal of Indians" and more. A report from Africa beginning: "The British have lately captured nine slave ships with 2,563 slaves---all whom were liberated..." with more (see).
Complete in 16 pages, measures about 6 1/2 by 10 inches with minor foxing and staining.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia: "Niles edited and published the Weekly Register until 1836, making it into one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States and himself into one of the most influential journalists of his day. Devoted primarily to politics, Niles' Weekly Register is considered an important source for the history of the period."
