CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, Nov. 3, 1948 See the photo for what could easily
be the most recognizable headline of the 20th century: DEWEY DEFEATS
TRUMAN. Even people who are not remotely knowledgeable about historic
newspapers are familiar with this headline! The early edition of this
paper printed this famous error, which was changed with the second
edition, however several bundles had already been shipped to the
Chicago suburbs. It is interesting to note that the typesetters of the
Tribune were on strike at the time, so much of this issue was set using
a typewriter, giving it its amateur appearance. Some sentences are even
pasted in upside down! Has some soft folds, in the fifth column there
are three very small tears along the fold, a minor tear in the text in
the last column is archivally mended, and a tear in the blank outer
margin is also archivally mended, otherwise the issue is in very good
condition. This is the COMPLETE ISSUE! Certainly a cornerstone issue
for any newspaper collection.
