Item # 663834

May 23, 1961

THE FREE PRESS, Michigan, May 23, 1961

* Freedom Riders
* Civil rights activists
* Montgomery, Alabama

The front page has a two-column, 3-line heading: "What It's Like To Be Part of Freedom Ride", which continues on page 5 with considerable detail. Another article on the front page has: "FBI Makes 1st Arrests In Alabama", with more on page nine. Not photoed is a related article on page 11 headed: "'WE HAVE TO GET READY TO SUFFER' - King Plans to Step Up Protests of Segregation", which includes a small photo of him. The back page has: "3 PRESIDENTS SET PRECEDENT - Intervention Law Invoked Before", which also has two related photos from Montgomery, one of which is captioned: "Marshaling of the National Guardsmen in Montgomery gave these schoolgirls a rare opportunity ti be admired." An opt-ed on page 8 has: "AS WE SEE IT - Violence in Alabama Cannot Be Tolerated." Yet another article on page 14, which is also not photoed has: "Senate Rejects Civil-Rights Rider to School-Aid Bill." Collectively, these articles provide a great look back at this historic period in American history - and the Civil Rights Movement.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 40 pages, minor margin wear, binding holes down the left spine, but overall nice.
