THE NEW YORK TIMES, June 28, 1945

* USS Bunker Hill - Essex-class aircraft carrier
* Invasion of Okinawa - Kamikazes attack

The front page has a four column headline: "LOSS OF 392 ON U.S. CARRIER REVEALED" with subheads that include: "Big Flat-Top Saved In Suicide Attacks" and more with related photo. (see) Reporting continues on page 5 with more photos. First report coverage on the Japanese kamikaze attacks on the USS Bunker Hill during the invasion of Okinawa. Reporting on many disasters such as this were kept from the public, sometimes for many months, until the family members of the killed were all notified, giving the reason for this late report. Still a first report here.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day throughout with much on World War II. Complete 34 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions.  Nice condition.
