NEW YORK TIMES, Aug. 27, 1957

* Start of the "Space Race" - R-7 Semyorka launched
* 1st intercontinental ballistic missile

The front page has a 3 line, 3 column head announcing the beginning of the missile race with the Soviet Union: "Russians Announce Firing Intercontinental Missile 'Huge Distance' To Target" with subheads (see). The announcement caused great concern in the United States, and started a national debate over the "missile gap" between America and Russia. America's first attempt of a month earlier ended in disaster.
Complete first section with pages 1-30. Some margin & fold wear, subscription label in the upper left, generally good.
