LOS ANGELES TIMES--EXTRA, Los Angeles, Dec. 7, 1957  The banner headline announces the embarrassing entry of the United States into the space race with the Soviet Union, with: "MOON BLOWS UP ! " with the lead-in phrase: "We Don't Know What Happened', and a subhead: "Rocket Barely Gets Off Pad, Falls Over and Burns in Flash". Also a large series of 4 photos of the tragedy (see).
This monumental failure of America's first attempt at space came just 2 months after the Soviets shocked the world with its successful Sputnik I launch, taking the lead in the space race.
The complete issue with all 4 sections, and in great condition. Not only an historic issue, but a very displayable one as well.
