July 07, 1821

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Maryland, July 7, 1821  An inside page has a nice article on the formal admission of Missouri to the union, prefaced with a document to the governor of Missouri signed by: John Quincy Adams, then Secretary of State, which notes: "...the honor of transmitting to your excellency an authenticated copy of the resolution of congress for admitting the state of Missouri into the union..." (see photos), and what follows is the: "Resolution providing for the admission of the state of Missouri into the union on a certain condition..." signed in type by the President: James Monroe (see photos). Missouri entered the union as a result of the Missouri Compromise, whereby, to balance the slave & free states, Missouri entered as a slave state while Maine entered as a free state.
Prefacing all this is a lengthy: "Legislature of Missouri - Governor Message" which related to the statehood issue and its constitution, signed in type by the governor: A. McNair.
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, nice condition.

This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
