March 19, 1836
NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER Baltimore, March 19, 1836 The front page has a brief item noting: "The people of Texas are divided among themselves, and, it is said, that gen. Samuel Houston and col. James Bowie have been displaced from their commands in the army." Nice to have mention of both Houston & Bowie on the front page.
Another lengthier report on page 3 is headed: "The Tampico Expedition" which relates to Texas (see photos). Other various news of the day including much on "Affairs In Florida" with talk of General Gaines' actions with the Indians.
Sixteen pages, 6 by 9 1/2 inches, nice condition.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
