February 04, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, Feb. 4, 1865

* Rare Confederate title
* Civil War nears the end

Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from just over 2 months before surrendering.
The front page has reports of some: "Legislative Proceedings", a few bits relating to the war including: "...that negotiations for peace have been inaugurated by the governments at Richmond and Washington, yet mindful of the maxim that in times of war, while 'we hold the olive branch in one hand, we should hold the sword in the other', therefore...until the issue...is known, North Carolina will not abate one jot or tittle of her determination and zeal for a vigorous prosecution of the war to an honorable peace."
The back page has much on the war including: "Secret Sessions--Secret Negotiations" "Habeas Corpus Resolutions" "An Important Letter--The Peace Movement at Richmond" "Speculations of a Richmond Correspondent" "Later From the North" and more.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper which is typical for late-war issues from the South as most of the paper mills were in the North. Very nice condition.
