THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 14, 1948

* Israeli Declaration of Independence
* State of Israel proclaimed (day of)

A very notable issue in Judaica issue as this was the day that Israel statehood was proclaimed, establishing the first Jewish state in 2,000 years. The four column headline announces: "ARABS MUSTER AT PALESTINE BORDERS; JEWISH AGENCY APPEALS FOR U. N. AID; ASSEMBLY SPEEDING INTERIM REGIME" with various subheads including: "British Renew
Bid of Palestine Aid" "Zionists To Set Up State On Schedule--Secrecy Marks Ceremony Set for Tonight--Arabs Seize Kfar Etzion, Jews Mobilize" and "Zionists Report Arab Legion is Free of British Command" and even more. This content carries over to page 5 where are found two photos headed: "On Alert In Holy Land As British Mandate Nears End" with a related article: "Plans for Truce and Jerusalem Administration" & also: 'Plea To U.N. Made By Jewish Agency".
Also on the front page is: "Air Crash Kills Lady Hartington, Daughter of Ex-Envoy J. P. Kennedy". Kathleen was the sister of John F. Kennedy.
  Compete in 48 pages, this is the "rag edition" created specifically for libraries requiring very high quality newsprint for long term storage. In excellent condition.
