June 23, 1821

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, June 23, 1821  Inside has a letter signed by: J. C. Calhoun: "Report on Fortifications" which is followed by a 6 page report "To the Hon. Secretary of the War Department" on the fortifications in the United States, concerning the defense of the country.
The back page has an update on the historic Erie Canal noting: "The great canal in New York is advancing rapidly. There is every reason to believe that this mighty work, the most splendid, as to its future effects that ever was accomplished in any country, will be completed within the expected period. This will force a communication with the waters of the Mississippi, and the time  is close at hand when an inland voyage from New York to New Orleans, about 3200 miles, may be performed in a steamboat!" (see photos)
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, very nice, clean condition.

This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
