WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION ILLUSTRATED, Chicago, January, 1893 A very short-lived illustrated newspaper formatted much like Harper's Weekly but which existed solely to report on the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This is the vol. 1 number 23 issue and still has the original colorful outer wrappers (rare as such). As would be expected there is various content with photographs concerning the construction & dedication of the Exposition.
Complete in 36 pages, minimal wear to the front cover with loss to a corner of the back cover, interior pages are in great condition with a water stain to the blank spine. An incredibly colorful and displayable front cover.

WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION ILLUSTRATED, Chicago, January, 1892 A very short-lived illustrated newspaper formatted much like Harper's Weekly but which existed solely to report on the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This is the vol. 1 number 11 issue and still has the original pink outer wrappers (rare as such). As would be expected there is much content concerning the construction of the Exposition, including much on Central & South America as well.
Complete in 32 pages, some minor wear to the cover, interior pages are in great condition. A very ornate masthead on both the cover and the inside front page (see).

HARPER'S BAZAR, New York, June 3, 1899 Very famous fashion magazine from the successful publishing house of Harper Brothers. It is the oldest continuously published fashion magazine in the world (now spelled "Bazaar") which began in 1867 as a weekly illustrated journal desirable today for the many fashion prints from the Victorian era.
The ftpg. shows: "Paris Gowns of Cashmere & Mousseline" with inside pages having more fashion prints of the day (see photos for some). One page features "Women's Garden, Golf, and Sun Bonnets". The best print is the very nice full page color plate of a: "Paris Midsummer Walking Costume" which is a perfect item for display, printed on a very high quality paper (see).
Complete issue, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.

MUNCY NEWS, Pennsylvania, July 30, 1892 A small, unusual format newspaper from this small town in northcentral Pennsylvania. It measures just 3 1/2 inches tall while being 7 inches wide with four pages. The ftpg. has "Local News" tidbits, pg. 2 has an item on a monument at the Gettysburg cemetery, pg. 3 has several ads, and pg. 4 has a few more news items. This is the vol. 1 number 3 issue and I doubt that the newspaper lasted very long.
Tiny binding holes at the blank spine, great condition.

SPRINGFIELD REPUBLICAN, Massachusetts, June 3, 1899 It is extremely difficult to find accounts of the deeds of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, aka "The Hole In The Wall Gang" and "The Wild Bunch", but this issue contains on page 4 a fine account of the train robbery on the Union Pacific Railroad at Wilcox, Wyoming, headed: "Hold Up On The Union Pacific--Express Car & Safe Blown Open & Contents Taken by Desperadoes" with the text taking 7 column inches. They were not identified by name as it was not know then who committed the robbery, but TheHistoryNet.com (see) gives further particulars including:

"The June 2, 1899, Wilcox holdup would become one of the West's most famous train robberies. The Union Pacific Overland Flyer No. 1 had two sections, each pulled by its own locomotive. The first section was flagged down by two men with lanterns at milepost No. 609 at 2:18 that rainy Friday morning. Thinking that a small wooden bridge ahead might have washed out overnight, engineer Jones brought this first section to a screeching stop. The two men, wearing masks, boarded the locomotive and ordered Jones and the fireman, named Dietrick, to pull forward to the bridge and stop again. Dynamite, already tucked under the trestle, was ignited, and Jones was again ordered to pull ahead "and be quick about it." When he moved too slowly for the outlaws, one of them clubbed him with a gun butt.

The train had barely cleared the bridge when the explosion came. Although the bridge was not destroyed, the bandits had prevented the train's second section, whose headlight they had seen, from following. They then told engineer Jones to stop the first section so that the passenger cars could be uncoupled. The mail and express cars were what interested them. Following orders, Jones and Dietrick pulled ahead another two miles, where four more outlaws were waiting. Three of the robbers herded the trainmen over to the mail car and ordered clerks Robert Lawson and Burt Bruce to open up. When the clerks did not immediately comply, the door was blown with more dynamite.

Finding very little, the outlaws next ordered the express car messenger, Charles Woodcock, to open the door. He refused. Again the thieves put a match to a couple of sticks of dynamite and easily blew the express car open. Woodcock was badly dazed in the explosion and unable to supply the bandits with the combination to the Pacific Express Co. safe. Therefore, more dynamite was used to blow open the safe. This charge proved a bit heavy, and succeeded in not only opening the safe but also blowing out the sides and the roof of the car.

By 4:15 a.m., the six bandits had gathered unsigned bank notes, cash, 19 scarf pins, 29 gold-plated cuff button pairs and four Elgin watches. The initial estimate claimed a total of $30,000 was taken, but in 1904, then Union Pacific Superintendent W.L. Park wrote that the railroad had actually lost more than $50,000, some of it in gold. The outlaws escaped in a northerly direction, toward the Hole-in-the-Wall, a well-known outlaw enclave in the middle of Wyoming.

Quite rare to find such accounts of this romanticized band of outlaws, particularly since the Paul Newman & Robert Redford movie. You get the complete 14 page issue which is in uncommonly nice, clean condition, with a bit of browning at the edges yet very little of the brittleness that typically plagues newspapers of this vintage.

JUDGE magazine, New York, July 27, 1892 Judge magazine was founded in 1881 by a group of artists, headed by James Albert Wales, who left the staff of the popular comic weekly Puck. The magazine featured bold satire and good political drawing with chromolithographic front and back covers and center spread.

After a strong start, the magazine found itself struggling to compete with its very similar rival Puck. Puck finally expired in 1918, while Judge continued to thrive into the 1930's and beyond.

The color prints are very desired for their displayability. This issue has as its political cartoons:
A fullpg. with 9: "Sketches In A Pool Room" and three full pages with 27 vignettes of: Glimpses of the Summer Pleasure Haunts of Northern Michigan--Petroskey & its Neighboring Resorts" (see). Also a great doublepg. centerfold: "A New Town at the Foot of the Cumberland Mountains in East Tennessee--Kimball & Its Environments" includes 12 vignettes (see). There are 3 pages which have 16 vignettes of scenes in Southwestern & Southeastern Missouri, including Joplin, Webb City, Carterville & Arcadia.

* Rare title from the late 19th century
* Pre statehood

This is actually a "territorial" newspaper, as Oklahoma did not become a state until ten years later in 1907, one of only 3 of the contiguous 48 to join the union in the 20th century (New Mexico & Arizona the other two). It is quite rare to find Oklahoma newspapers from the 1800's.
Formatted much like other newspapers of the day with both ads and news reports. Complete an an 8 page newspaper, small folio size, even browning with some edge tears & minor chipping, a few old tape mends. Loose at the spine. Should be handled carefully.

THE ILLUSTRATED AMERICAN, New York & Chicago, Oct. 25, 1890 Formatted much like Harper's Weekly but smaller in size, this is one of the more scarce illustrated titles from the 19th century. The content is varied with a feature on some women of the period, with photos. Also literary content with many illustrations. Many photos also accompanying: "Six Weeks' Tour in Europe" plus prints of: "Where Noted Men Have Lived in New York". Near the back are items on checkers, chess and whist.
Complete in 64 pages and still has the original outer wrappers. Very high quality paper in great condition with minor smudges to just 2 pgs.
