TAUNTON DAILY GAZETTE, Massachusetts, set of 4 issues on Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak. The set includes:
1). The game in which Joe DiMaggio got his first hit in his 56 game hitting streak.
2). Joe DiMaggio breaking the previous hitting streak record.
3). Joe DiMaggio hitting in his 56th consecutive game.
4). Joe DiMaggio failing to hit in the 57th consecutive game.

More specifically the issues are:
1). May 16, 1941 It was in the game of May 15 against the Chicago White Sox that DiMaggio got his first hit of his record-setting streak. There are two mentions of the game, one being a simple note of the score under "Major League Standings" and the other some talk of the game, but with no mention of Joe DiMaggio in either. Nonetheless this was the first game of his streak.

2). July 3, 1941 The sports page includes the box score of the game as well as some text noting Joe DiMaggio had broken Wee Willie Keeler's record of 44 consecutive games, reading: "...while Joe DiMaggio was breaking Wee Willie Keeler's all-time record of hitting safely in 44 consecutive games. Joe's record-smasher was a homer, his 100th hit of the season..." with a bit more (see).

3). July 17, 1941 The sports page reports DiMaggio getting his 56th consecutive game hit under the headline: "Yankees Whip Cleveland 10-3", the report noting: "With Joe DiMaggio hitting a double and two singles to stretch his hitting streak to 56 consecutive games..." (see). Little did they know this would be the end.

4). July 18, 1941 The streak ends. The sports page has a nice milti-line, two column headline: "JOE DIMAGGIO GOES HITLESS" "Yankee Star's Streak Ends After 56 Games But Team Whips Cleveland in Arc Game" with various reports on the streak ending (see).
Each of the four issues are complete, ranging from 12 to 24 pages each depending on the date. Tiny binding holes at the blank spine margin do not deter.
A rare opportunity for a complete set of all 4 significant issues relating to this noteworthy event in baseball history, which has yet to be broken nearly 70 years later.
* Great broadside on the end of World War II
* Nazi occupied island the day before

This English-speaking island in the English Channel was under Nazi control during World War II. This is a broadside issue (a single sheet printed on the front only; back is blank), of larger size than this newspaper typically published.

It is printed in broadside fashion--just one column of text stretching from edge to edge--headed:

* THE WAR IS OVER FOR GUERNSEY, German Officers Inform Bailiff of Surrender, Historic States Meeting At Mid-Dad To-Day

Printed on either side of the masthead are: "War Is Over!" and "Good News Issue".

This item measures 11 3/4 by 19 inches. It was once folded into a volume and when trimmed at the fold there was loss to just half of one line of text although still partially readable (see photos), and archivally mended on the reverse at this location. Otherwise the broadside is in excellent condition.
* Walt Disney's "Fantasia" is reviewed upon its premiere

Page 28 contains a quite lengthy review of the new animated feature-length movie produced by Walt Disney, titled "Fantasia". The review is headed: "Walt Disney's 'Fantasia' an Exciting New Departure in Film Entertainment, Opened Last Night at the Broadway" with the review taken an entire column (see photos for portions).
Accompanying the review is an article headed: "Fantasia Discussed From the Musical Standpoint--Sound Reproduction Called Unprecedented" which is quite lengthy as well (see for portions).

Fantasia is a 1940 animated film produced by Walt Disney, and is the third film in the canon of Disney animated features. Fantasia is an experiment in animation and music, consisting of classical music presented against the backdrop of animation and featuring no dialogue, only spoken introductions by Deems Taylor before each animated segment, as well as during the intermission segment, "The Sound Track". The music is recorded under the direction of Leopold Stokowski; seven of the eight pieces were performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Animated artwork of varying degrees of abstraction or literalism is used to illustrate or accompany the concert in various ways. The film also includes live-action segments featuring Stokowski, the orchestra, and American composer and music critic Deems Taylor, who serves as the host for the film. Besides its avant-garde qualities, Fantasia was notable for being the first major film released in stereophonic sound, using a process dubbed "Fantasound" (credit Wikipedia).

The review includes a photo from the movie, and the facing page includes an advertisement for: "Today, First Regular Performances..." of Fantasia (see).
* Disney's animated movie "Pinocchio" is introduced to the world

Page 18 of this newspaper contains the first review of the new animated movie from the Disney Studios, "Pinocchio". This was their 2nd animated movie, following on the heals of the wildly successful "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

The very favorable review begins: "If Westbrook Pegler could write...that Walt Disney's "Snow White" was the happiest event since the armistice, we can report confidently this morning that Mr. Disney's "Pinocchio" is the happiesst event since the war..." with much more (see photos for portions).

The review includes a two column photo from the movie showing both Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket (see).

This is the complete 44 page newspaper, rag edition in great condition.

wikipedia notes: Pinocchio is Walt Disney's second animated feature in the Disney animated features canon. It was produced by Walt Disney and was originally released to theatres by RKO Radio Pictures on February 7, 1940. Based on the story Pinocchio: Tale of a Puppet by Carlo Collodi, it was made in response to the enormous success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The plot of the film involves a wooden puppet being brought to life by a blue fairy, who tells him he can become a real boy if he proves himself "brave, truthful, and unselfish". Thus begin the puppet's adventures to become a real boy, which involve many encounters with a host of unsavory characters.

The film was adapted by Aurelius Battaglia, William Cottrell, Otto Englander, Erdman Penner, Joseph Sabo, Ted Sears, and Webb Smith from Collodi's book. The production was supervised by Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske, and the film's sequences were directed by Norman Ferguson, T. Hee, Wilfred Jackson, Jack Kinney, and Bill Roberts.

During the Nazi occupation they took over this newspaper and filled it with pro-German propaganda, offering a unique insight into how the Axis reported the news during the war.
The front page is quite decorative with a large banner headline: "ISLAND DAY OF REJOICING" with subheads "Rapturous Greeting for British Troops by Vast Crowds" and "Big Ceremony with Military Band on Saturday". wikipedia notes: The 1941 World Series matched the New York Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers, with the Yankees winning in five games to capture their fifth title in six years, and their ninth overall.

The name "Subway Series" arose for a World Series played between two New York City teams. The series was punctuated by the Dodgers' Mickey Owen's dropped third strike of a sharply breaking curveball (a suspected spitball) pitched by Hugh Casey in the ninth inning of Game 4. The play led to a Yankees rally and brought them one win away from another championship.

The Yankees were back after a one-year hiatus, having won thirteen (13) of their last fourteen (14) Series games and twenty-eight (28) of their last thirty-one (31) games in the World Series.

This was the first Subway Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees, who had already faced the crosstown New York Giants five times, and the Series was now 1–0 in favor of the Bronx Bombers. These two teams would meet a total of seven (7) times from 1941–1956—the Dodgers' only victory coming in 1955.

Luckman is in the NFL Hall of Fame, is in the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, his 7 touchdown passes is a record which has been matched but not topped, and in this same game was the first 400 yard passing game in NFL history. 6 report regarding the death of baseball star Lou Gehrig, who earned
the nickname the Iron Horse because he played in 2,130 consecutive
games. In the report it states that Gehrig died from a rare disease
...that everyone except he himself believed incurable....The disease
which erased Gehrig from the lineup of the mighty Yankees on May 2,
1939, was diagnosed as amyotrophic lateral schlerosis... Has details
about his stellar career and admirable qualities as a player and an
individual. Somewhat uncommon to have a photo, even a small one, with a
report of Gehrigs death. Issue is trimmed close at the spine causing
minor unrelated loss, slightly browned at the edges, otherwise in good
condition.

* Rare pro Nazi newspaper
* Island of Guernsey

This is a fascinating issue, as this island in the English Channel was occupied by the Nazi around July 1, 1940 and remained in Nazi control till the end of the war. This issue, just a month after German occupation, has a great front page, giving the text of the announcement from the British residents who remained in Guernsey after the occupation to those who evacuated earlier.

Obviously filled with much Nazi propaganda the full text can be seen in the photos below, one bit including: "...Some will fear, I imagine, that I am making this record with a revolver pointed at my head & speaking from a typescript thrust into my hand by a German officer. The actual case is very different..." with much more.

Complete in 8 pages, much other Nazi propaganda inside and a wealth of ads. Measures 12 by 16 1/2 inches and in very nice condition.

* Joe DiMaggio breaks game hitting streak record
* New York Yankees
* In a NYC paper

This 34 page newspaper has a five column headline on page 20:

* DiMaggio Bats Way to Record, 42 Games in Row

with subheads that include: "DiMaggio, Getting Hit in Each Contest, Beats Modern Mark--Keeler Record 44 Games" "31,000 Hail Batting Ace" and more

Also a nice photo of Dimaggio being greeted by teammates after his accomplishment.

Of course game # 56 is the one everyone remembers as this was the amazing number he ended up finishing with.

But here is when he actually broke the record that was held at the time by George Sisler. Great to have this in the New York Times as well.

Other news of the day with much on World War II. Light browning with some margin wear but no text loss, otherwise in good condition.

wikipedia notes: Joseph Paul DiMaggio (November 25, 1914–March 8, 1999), born Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio, Jr., was an American baseball player for the New York Yankees. He was the middle of three brothers who each became major league center fielders, the others being Vince and Dom.

A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, DiMaggio was a 3-time MVP winner and 13-time All-Star (the only player to be selected for the All-Star Game in every season he played). At the time of his retirement, he had the fifth-most career home runs (361) and sixth-highest slugging percentage (.579) in history. He is perhaps best known for his 56-game hitting streak (May 15–July 16, 1941), a record that still stands.[1] A 1969 poll conducted to coincide with the centennial of professional baseball voted him the sport's greatest living player.
SOUTH PACIFIC DAILY NEWS, June 7, 1944 This was one of many newspapers published by the soldiers at the various installations throughout the theaters of war during World War II. typically they were rather crudely done, of small size & printed in small quantities. This issue has a more professional look than most and has the top half of the ftpg. announcing: "Invasion Allied Armies Land In North France". Almost the entire 14 pages deal with the invasion with some reflection upon the efforts already accomplished in the war.
Measures 8 by 13 inches, apparently done on a small mimeograph machine, red ink in the masthead, various drawings throughout. Once stapled at the top which has since been removed. Generally nice condition with very mild margin wear. Terrific to have this signal event in a small "camp" newspaper.
