CENTRAL GEORGIAN, Sandersville, Georgia, June 5, 1861

* Confederate title from the Civil War
* The Lincoln Administration

In our over 30 years in the rare newspaper business this is the very first time we have ever had a newspaper from this small Georgia town, current population less than 7,000. The ftpg. has a bigoted report headed "A Colored Scene on the Road to Washington" (see photos), which is followed by a report headed: "A Big Gun Fight" which includes: "...speculating upon the timing of the opening of the fire upon Fort Pickens, says: 'But commence when it will, I don't think I risk much in saying that in 60 hours after the first gun is fired there will not be a Yankee left in Fort Pickens...". Pg. 2 has a wealth of reports concerning the Civil War including: "The Washington Rifles at Home" "Tariff of the Confederate States" "Farmers and the Confederate Loan" "Doctors of Georgia" "The Fight at Acquia Creek" which includes: "The ball has been opened by the Lincoln government in this section of Virginia..." with more on the battle (see photos). A short report is headed: "The Fight at Fairfax", and "Seizure of a British Vessel" Other items include: "The Southern Soldiers" "Unusual Patriotism" "A Warning to Our Enemies" "Reported Purchase of Arms for the South in Birmingham" "Tariff of the Confederate States" and "Patriotism in Baldwin" and likely other tidbits. Most of the bkpg. is taken up with ads. The very top of the front leaf has a 3/4 by 1 1/2 inch piece removed, not close to any text or ink. Complete in 4 pgs., a few ink smears on the ftpg. only, generally in very nice, clean condition.

THE TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, Houston, Texas, Aug. 3, 1863 Confederate newspaper from Texas are exceedingly rare and we've only had a small number in our 33 years. This is one of the earlier issues we have had. Although the condition is poor the content is terrific.
The front page has a great amount of reporting on the Civil War including much on Gettysburg, with items headed: "Letter from Alexandria" "Gen. Meade To His Army" "Proclamation by the Governor to the People of the State of Texas" ", a letter signed in type by: W. T. Sherman; a note: "The President To His Country" signed: Abraham Lincoln" which is concerning the victory at the battle of Gettysburg. There are also several additional reports concerning the battle of Gettysburg, portions of which can be seen in the photos. More Civil War reporting on the bkpg. as well.
This is a single sheet newspaper of folio size. There are many tears, much irregularity (with loss) at the margins, old tape mends improperly done, a small piece from near the middle, etc. The photos give a good sense as to the poor condition. But the content is terrific & much is unaffected by the condition (see).
A rare opportunity not only for a Texas Confederate newspaper, but with great content and at a low price due to the condition.

THE DAILY JOURNAL, from Wilmington, North Carolina, dated July 8, 1861 Has "Confederate States Of America" printed in the masthead which is rarely seen on Southern newspapers from the Civil War. Has all ads and notices on the frontpage. Page 2 has a report: "Death of Governor Ellis". The report about the death of North Carolina's governor states, in part: "...Ever since, a dying man, he has stood like a martyr at the state, concealing as far as possible his sufferings...we honestly believe a martyr to his devotion to the cause of the South.
A lot of five issues of the DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER from Virginia, dates being Nov. 13 and Dec. 31, 1863 plus Jan. 4, Feb. 9 and 10, 1864. Each of these issues is single sheet and is damaged, having some loss or staining or holes or wear or other disfigurements. However there is still much good Civil War content on both the front and back pages. The Jan. 4, 1864 issue has just a one column masthead (see).
Offered as a wholesale lot of Confederate newspapers.

Being a literary-themed magazine there are no pure news reports, but there are several articles which focus on the richness of the South.
THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, November 5, 1861

* Rare confederate issue from the deep South
* News from Richmond

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
<description-text>THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, November 5, 1861

* Rare confederate issue from the deep South
* News from Richmond

Front page has: "Latest From Richmond" "The Forces of the Great Naval Expedition" "One Thousand Contraband Negroes with it" "Supposed Destination" "Gen. Sherman In Command" "His Headquarters to be on the Atlantic". Front page also has a report: "A Valuable Slave Killed".

Page 2 has: "Important From Washington" "Resignation of Scott Cameron and Seward" "McClellan Refuses to Obey Lincoln's Order".

First leaf has a round hole in the lower margin, has a non-archival pieces of tape in the lower margins of page 2 and the back page, lite damp staining in the lower left corner, bit of lite foxing.</description-text>

* Rare title from Augusta GA Georgia during the Confederacy...
* Civil war original

A very rare newspaper from the Confederacy, and rather late in the war as well.
The front page has several items on the war including a report beginning: "The first thirty days of the spring campaign have opened gloriously. All around our lines successes have attended our arms...The enemy have been everywhere repulsed..." with more.

Also: "Letter from the Front" is datelined Dalton, March 5, with some nice & detailed reporting. Also: "Interesting From Mississippi" "Sherman Back to Vicksburg" and other war-related items.

The front page also has two columns of "Special Notices" and ads.

There is more war reporting on pages 2 & 3, items headed: "Letter From Western Virginia" "A Spirited and Patriotic Order from Gen. W. H. T. Walker" "Letter From Northern Virginia" "Action of the Twelfth Georgia Battalion" "Northern News" "Action of the Third Georgia Battalion of Sharpshooters" "From the Front" "From Charleston" and a bit more. There are some ads on pgs. 2 & 3 as well.

The back page has one column of news with the balance taken up with ads & notices including one "$500 Reward" ad for two "runaway Negro fellows" with details.

Complete in 4 pages, a few very small holes caused by paper weakness & not wear. A scalloped piece from the very top affects blank margin only on pages 1 & 2 not touching any text. A very slight separation a the front leaf fold juncture not causing any loss. Generally in nice condition.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper of folio size. There are various tears which have been archivally mended on the back page which causes no loss of text, and there is essentially no loss of paper due to the wear. Apparently never trimmed as the margins are rather wide. Various foxing and some light water staining.
SUNDAY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, January 19, 1862

* Rare title from the deep South
* Confederate original

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city which surrendered without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.

Front page items include: "What the Morning Journals Say" "Letter from Baton Rouge" "Gleanings" "Gov. Morgan's Message" and more.
Pg. 2 items include; "Death of Ex-President Tyler" "Movements of Yankee Fleets" "State Secrets" and more. Page 3 is mostly taken up with ads as is page 4, although it does include; "A Reminiscence of the Missouri Campaign"

Among the front page ads is an illustrated one for; "Negroes For Sale" (see) and pg. 3 has an illus. ad for: "Ranaway--The slave woman Elizabeth...".

The back page includes 20 illustrated ship ads.
CENTRAL GEORGIAN, Sandersville, Georgia, July 10, 1861

* Very rare Confederate title
* Civil War era Sandersville, Georgia

Quite rare to find this obscure, small town newspaper from the east-central part of Georgia, current population less than 7,000.

The front page is almost entirely taken up with literary articles.

Page 2 has some reports on the Civil War with small heads including:

* Hancock Volunteers
* Law and Order
* Military Notice
* Important From Arkansas
* Engagement Near Winchester

and more.

Most of pg. 3 & the back page are taken up with ads including a page 3 ad for: "Negroes Wanted...Likely Negroes..." and a "$10 Reward" ad for a runaway Negro man, with details.

The very top of the front leaf has a 1/2 by 1 1/2 inch piece removed, not close to any text or ink. At one point the paper suffered ink stains which have since eaten through the paper in two locations (see photos), while in other places the stains are small & caused no damage. Complete in 4 pages & some foxing at the spine.

THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, April 18, 1862

* Rare Confederate title from the deep South
* General Beauregard address to the rebels

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. As a result, "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.

Notable content includes a ftpg. notice offering a reward for "Deserters" of the "Buckner Avengers".

Pg. 2 heads under an engraving of a smoking cannon: "Important From Richmond" "Fighting on the Peninsula" "Repulse of the Enemy" "From Army of the Mississippi" "Gen. Beauregard's Address to the Army" "His Telegraphic Report of the Battle of Shiloh". Address is signed in type: G. T. Beauregard.

Also a report about the capture of the Confederate steamship Magnolia by the Brooklyn.

Pg. 3 has a sale notice: "Negroes Arrived This Day" and, under "Texas In The Army", is a list of the Texas regiments serving in the war, plus the names of their commanding officers. Pg. 3 has four, small stray pieces of non-archival tape in various ads.

This is a very nice issue as the front page has over 1 1/2 columns taken up with a detailed report headed: "The Battle of Fishing Creek" "Full and Graphic Account Of It".
This is followed by another interesting item headed: "Arming The Negroes" which was taken from the New York Herald, and begins:
"After a great deal of thought, reading, reflection, meditation and prayer, we have determined to assist Massa Greeley in his pet scheme of arming the n****s..." with much more, full of the bigotry which was rampant at the time (photos below).
There is also an illustrated "Negroes For Sale" ad on pg. 2.
Complete in 4 pgs. and in uncommonly nice, clean condition, just slightly irregular at the blank spine margin not affecting any type.
DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, from Richmond,Virginia, dated May 3, 1864. This is a rare title from the Capital of the Confederacy. A large single sheet issue with front page articles headed:

* The War In North Carolina
* Evacuation Of Washington By The Yankees
* Sinking Of The Yankee Vessels By The Florida
* The Victory Of Plymouth

There is more Civil War coverage on the back page as well. This issue has a wealth of war reporting! There are ads on both pages as well, many of which are military in theme. Also included is a Presidential message signed in type: Jefferson Davis

This singlepage issue has some center crease wear with some holes and staining. A few tiny holes elsewhere, otherwise good. See photos for details.

NEW ORLEANS DAILY CRESCENT, New Orleans, Louisiana, March 8, 1861

* Confederate title from Civil War

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period. This is an issue from five weeks after Louisiana seceded from the Union and a month before the battle of Fort Sumter.

The ftpg. includes reports from the: "Official Journal of the Convention of the State of Louisiana" plus other news of the day under the headings: "Domestic Intelligence" "Local Intelligence" and others, including: "News for Gen. Twiggs" "Explosion of a Gun Factory Boiler..." "Proceedings of the Federal Congress" and more. The latter heading includes: "...considered the inaugural warlike. He said the seceded states would never come back under any circumstances..." with more.

Other reports give reaction to Lincoln's recent inaugural address, and a ftpg. item: "The Flag Of The South" has nice reading (see). News items on pg. 3 include: "Abolition Misrepresentations" "Talk On Change" and more. Pg. 5 is all ads including a group of slave sale ads with little prints (see photos). Pgs. 6 & 7 are mostly ads, and pg. 8 is a mix of illustrated steamboat ads and various news items. Complete in 8 pgs., folio size, bit irregular at the blank spine margin, some minor edge tears.

The ftpg. includes a mixture of ads and news, one of the ads is headed: "Negroes For Sale" with a bit of text and two small engravings (see). There is a similar ad on pg. 3 as well. The ftpg. also has: "From the Seat of War In Virginia" and "What the Morning Journals Say" which contains some war-related reports. Also: "A Venerable Hero" and other news tidbits. But perhaps the most interesting ftpg. item is: "Description of the Merrimac" or referred to as "...the Norfolk Turtle..." which has some nice text on this novel, new water craft, and very early as well, being nearly two months before it would become famous in the naval battle against the Yankee's Monitor.
Pg. 2 includes: "Women & Children Leaving New Bern" "125 Federal Vessels at Hatteras" "Newbern to be Attacked" "Veto of the Cotton Relief Bill". Each is present in both English and French. Pg.3 also has much text on the "'Convention of the State of Louisiana taking nearly 4 columns. Similar items are on pg. 4 with much of pgs. 5-8 taken up with a wide variety of ads including several runaway slave ads, Negroes for sale ads, and the like. The bkpg. has 2 columns of "Steamboat" ads with little illustrations within each.

Eight pgs., irregular at the spine from disbinding, some minor edge tears, otherwise quite nice.

    <description-text>NEW ORLEANS DAILY CRESCENT, Louisiana, March 30, 1861

* Confederate newspaper

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly there after Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
* Rare Confederate newspaper before Yankee occupation

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.

Most of the front page has various news reports along with a full column of "Military Notices" (see). Among the front page items are those headed: "The Skirmish at Vienna, Va." "Prayer on the Field of Battle" "From the Indian Territory" "Letter of a Deserter" "The Skirmish at New Creek Depot" "Military Correspondence" and more.

Pg. 2 has some news reports as well, with over half of the page taken up with ads.

Pg. 3 is entirely taken up with ads, including some illustrated ads headed: "Negroes For Sale" and "Spring and Summer Arrangement. My slave depot...will remain open...forwarding and selling slaves on commission..." (see), etc.

Page 4 is taken up with ads as well.
Complete in 4 pages, folio size, a bit irregular at the spine margin but causing no loss of text, two small tape mends to a back page tear, various margin tears.

A fine opportunity for a rare Confederate title.

THE NEW SOUTH, Port Royal, South Carolina, November 8, 1862

* Rare Union issue from the Confederacy
* Port Royal South Carolina

Here is an interesting newspaper established in March of 1862 at Port Royal after its capture by Union forces during the early part of the Civil War. Issued in a military command, the newspaper sought to provide mostly military but no political news for the soldiers, so as not to distract them from their mission which was the suppression of the Rebellion.

It is also interesting that a Union newspaper was published in South Carolina considering the state remained a Confederate stronghold until the end of the war.

Notable content in this volume I (number 12) issue includes a front page military order announcing the death by natural causes of a Union general named O. M. Mitchel, commander of the 10th Army Corps, signed in type: J. M. Brannan. The front page also has: Last Words of Gen. Mitchel and a poem written by an officer in memory of Mitchel. Under The Pocotaligo Expedition is the Official Report of Brig. Gen. J. M. Brannan, which concludes on the reverse, signed in type: J.M. Brannan.

This was a normally a four page paper, but due the non-receipt of paper, as explained on the reverse, this issue was published as a single sheet. Issue measures about 13 by 9 1/8 inches, the front page has minor fold foxing in the upper half, and there is some binding residue at the spine, occasional foxing, otherwise in very good condition.

Issue measures about 13 by 9 1/8 inches, the front page has minor fold foxing in the upper half, and there is some binding residue at the spine, occasional foxing, otherwise in very good condition.</description-text>

Good condition. Great reading. The image shown is an example of what you will receive. The actual issue will be in equal or better condition to the one shown.</description-text>
